How to Choose a Lifting Belt: A UK Lifter’s Guide

A lifting belt is one of the few pieces of kit most serious lifters end up owning. But the right belt depends on how you train. Here’s what actually matters when you choose one.
What a lifting belt is for
A belt gives your core something firm to brace against. You take a big breath into your stomach, push your midsection out into the belt and hold that tension through the lift. It doesn’t do the work for you — it helps you brace harder on heavy compound lifts like squats and deadlifts.
Most lifters save the belt for their heaviest working sets rather than wearing it for every exercise. Learn to brace without one first.
Lever vs prong buckle
- Lever buckle: snaps shut to the same tightness every time and releases in one motion. Great for quick on/off between heavy sets. Our lever belt uses a stainless steel black lever buckle.
- Prong (roller) buckle: easier to adjust tighter or looser from set to set, or between squats and deadlifts. Our leather belt uses a dual-pronged roller buckle in high-quality steel.
Width and thickness
A 4-inch width that stays the same all the way round is the classic choice for squats and deadlifts — it gives the most surface to brace against. Both FIT KULTURE lifting belts are 4" wide; the lever belt is 10 mm thick for a stiffer feel.
Material
- Leather: firm and structured, breaks in over time.
- Suede-finished leather: grippier against your top, so it moves less while you lift.
How to get the right size
Measure around your waist where you’ll wear the belt — usually around the belly button — not your trouser size. Measure over the kind of top you train in. If you’re between sizes, check our size guide before ordering.
How to wear it
- Position it around your midsection, over your stomach and lower back.
- Tight enough that you can just slide a flat hand between belt and stomach.
- Breathe in, brace out into the belt, then lift.
- Loosen or open it between sets.
The bottom line
Choose lever if you want speed and the same fit every time. Choose prong if you like adjusting. Get the size right, learn to brace, and the belt becomes part of your heavy days.
